Cascade’s boys’ cross country team ran to a third-place finish at the Center Point-Urbana Invitational, Sept. 22, and the girls finished fourth.
Leading the way for the boys was Cole Miller who finished eighth (18:09). Adam Knepper was 10th (18:18), Carson Nauman 16th (18:57), Jonah Manternach 24th (20:04) and Vic Kauder 31st (20:29). Others running were Dane Bertling 33rd (20:50), Max Nadeau 52nd (22:13), Tyler Kaalberg 63rd (23:13) and Nate Manternach 73rd (27:05).
Miller, Kauder and Bertling all recorded their best times of the year.
“In the boys’ varsity races, we need to get our fourth and fifth counters closer to our third placer at the upcoming meets if we are to improve to the next level,” coach Bob Davidshofer said.
Marion won the boys’ title with 29 points. CPU was second (35), Cascade third (83), Isaac Newton Christian fourth (126), North Linn fifth (150), Edgewood-Colesburg sixth (157) and Springville-Central City seventh (168).
Emma Ostswinkle led the girls’ team placing fourth (21:03). Conlin was 15th (23:54), Grace Bower 24th (25:30), Lilly Topping 28th (25:53), Knapp 44th (29:13) and Leah Schwenker 58th (35:39).
“I was quite satisfied with our performances. The girls’ varsity had their best total running time of the year for the top five counters. Additionally, Anna Conlin and Maddie Knapp had their best times of the year,” Davidshofer said.
Marion took home the girls’ team title with 35 points. CPU was second (56), North Linn third (71), Cascade fourth (93), Hillcrest Academy fifth (142) and Ed-Co sixth (151).
Hallie Kelchen won her first junior high race of the season with a time of (13:28), a full 19 seconds in front of the second-place finisher. Sophie Miller took 31st at 18:48.
Leading the junior high boys was Eli Merfeld in 16th (15:07), followed by Andrew Kaalberg 17th (15:09) and Trenton Topping 21st (15:37).
“In the girls’ junior high division, it was good to see Hallie win her first race,” Davidshofer said.
