Cascade’s cross country teams put together solid performances at the Anamosa Invitational Sept. 28 where the varsity girls placed seventh and the boys were ninth.
Emma Ostwinkle led the way for the Cougar girls with an 11th-place finish in 21:40. Grace Rhomberg was 17th (22:08), Harley Bradtke-Stelken 36th (23:16), Grace Bower 54th (25:23) and Lilly Topping 55th (25:28).
Solon earned the girls team title with 45 points. Monticello was second (70), Tipton third (113), Springville 14th (130), North Linn fifth (146), South Winneshiek (166), Cascade seventh (168), Anamosa eighth (173), Fort Madison ninth (179) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson 10th (200).
Cole Miller finished 27th in the boys varsity race In 18:16. Carson Nauman was 29th (18:22), Adam Knepper 36th (18:55), Tyler Kaalberg 56th (20:01) and Max Nadeau 57th (20:05) rounded out the counters. Jonah Manternach and Dane Bertling placed 59th (20:06) and 65th (20:25), respectively.
Tipton garnered the boys team title with 36 points. Calamus-Wheatland was second (89), Cedar Rapids Jefferson third (94), Monticello fourth (104), Camanche fifth (128), South Winneshiek sixth (141), Fort Madison seventh (175), Solon eighth (195), Cascade ninth (201), Anamosa 10th (230), North Linn 11th (298) and Springville 12th (323).
“Both varsity teams ran well and improved on their times at Anamosa a week ago,” coach Bob Davidshofer said.
“For the girls, Grace Bower improved on her time by 58 seconds, Harley Bradtke by 49 seconds and Grace Rhomberg by 16 seconds. For the boys, Carson Nauman improved by 18 seconds, Tyler Kaalberg by 11 seconds, Cole Miller by 10 and Max Nadeau and Dane Bertling by eight seconds.
“I was very pleased with the improvement of both teams. Our biggest concern right now is cutting down on the time on the boys varsity team between our third and fourth runners,” Davidshofer added.
The Cougars finished fifth in the boys junior varsity race. Tyson Hill placed 16th (20:31), Davis Manternach 23rd (21:05), Sean Pry 26th (21:11), Vic Kauder 42nd (21:52), Ben Boffeli 45th (22:01) and Gavin Foust-Wollenberg 65th (23:49).
“Gavin Foust-Wollenberg (42 seconds) and Sean Pry (20 seconds) made the most improvement on the junior varsity level,” Davidshofer said.
Delaney Kremer led Cascade in the girls junior high race, she was 34th in 14:58. Ella Nauman was 50th (16:04), Kennedy Simon 52nd (16:07), Leah Schwenker 59th (16:50) and Issie Rhomberg 65th (17:27). The Cougars were fifth overall as a team.
Cascade placed sixth in the boys junior high competition. Payton Feldmann was 40th (13:19), Nate Manternach 51st (13:56), Eli Merfeld 59th (14:05), Trenton Topping 66th (14:36) and Nate Milum 94th (16:46).
