The Cascade Cougars and Anamosa Blue Raiders faced off in a Class 2A District Semifinal, July 13, at Jenk Field in Dyersville. The Cougars left no doubt in the 7-0 victory.
Cougar ace Eli Green fanned two Blue Raiders in the top half of the first and the Cougar offense pressured them for four runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Ted Menster doubled. Green followed with a walk. Menster and Green then pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third. Kaleb Topping’s ground ball was not fielded cleanly allowing Menster to score. A wild pitch from the Blue Raider pitcher scored Cass Hoffman, in the game as the courtesy runner for Green, to make it 2-0. Devin Simon singled. Cade Rausch followed with a double to drive in Simon for a 3-0 lead. Rausch eventually scored on a fielder’s choice by Mason Otting and a botched rundown to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
The four runs were more than enough for Green who struck out six in six innings while only giving up three hits. Jack Carr struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
Tanner Simon hammered a double to deep center in the third and scored on a passed ball.
In the fifth Green led off with a walk. Hoffman, again running for Green, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Hoffman scored on another Blue Raider wild pitch. Rausch walked and was driven in on a double by Otting to give the Cougars their final run.
Tanner Simon went 2-for-3 with a double. Kaleb Topping went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Jack Menster went 1-for-3with a double and a run scored. Cade Rausch was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run scored.
