Four members of the Cascade girls' track and field team have earned their opportunity to compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines April 30.

The invitations have gone to Elizabeth Gibbs, Devin Simon, Kate Green and Brianna Koppes. Gibbs and Simon will participate in two events as they both earned spots in the 400-meter hurdles with Gibbs having the sixth-fastest qualifying time of 66.09 and Simon is 11th at 66.31. They will also compete with Green and Koppes in the shuttle hurdle relay with the 13th fastest time in that event at 68.50.

"We are extremely proud of our girls that qualified to compete against the best the state of Iowa has to offer. It is always a great accomplishment for a small school to be represented at Drake," coach Tim Frake said. "Our hurdlers put in a lot of time out of season and during the season, so it is great to see that work pay off. We might not have much depth but the quality of our team shows up at every meet, as we just missed qualifying in a couple other events. The main focus of the team is to continue to improve so we can take as many girls as possible to the state meet."

The shuttle hurdle relay will compete in the prelims at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 30. The finals for the event are slated for 11:30 a.m. The 400-hurdles run as a timed final at 11:30 a.m.

The team did go to work this week in the West Delaware Girls Invitational held in Manchester, April 21, as the Cougars took ninth place in 16-team field.

Denver won the title with 92 points while second-place Western Dubuque had 84 points.

Mount Vernon was third (59.50), Dike-New Hartford fourth (59), Jesup and Independence tied for fifth place (47), Marion seventh (46.5), Vinton-Shellsburg eighth (40), Cascade ninth (38), LaPorte City Union 10th (31), Central Elkader 11th (15), West Delaware 12th (nine), Maquoketa Valley 13th (eight), Edgewood-Colesburg 14th (six), Starmont 15th (four) and Beckman 16th (three).

This was another productive meet for the big four with Simon crossing the line first in the 100-hurdles to win that even in 16.15.

However, it was Gibbs and Simon's finish in the 400-hurdles that earned their spots in that event in the Drake Relays. Gibbs took second place (1:06.09) just ahead Simon who was third (1:06.31).

Gibbs, Green, Koppes and Simon showed what they are capable of as they were first in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:08.74.

The Cougars 4x400 team of Molly Roling, Gibbs, Grace Rhomberg and Simon were fourth (4:11.83).
