Cascade battled brutal temperatures and high winds at the North Linn Invitational Oct. 12 where the boys finished eighth and the girls 10th.
Cole Miller led the Cougars in the boys varsity race with a 24th-place finish in 17:51. Adam Knepper was 35th (18:02), Carson Nauman 42nd (18:14), Vic Kauder 65th (19:00) and Jonah Manternach 79th (19:39). Sam Noonan and Dylan Bertling placed 90th (20:14) and 108th (21:01), respectively.
Tipton earned the boys team title with 24 points. Marion was second (65), Mason City third (118), Williamsburg fourth (122), Maquoketa Valley fifth (156), Solon sixth (189), Grundy Center-Gladbrook-Reinbeck seventh (208), Cascade eighth (228), Washington ninth (238), Iowa City Regina 10th (254), Hudson 11th (295), Mount Pleasant 12th (332), Edgewood-Colesburg 13th (401), Springville-Central City 14th (430), Alburnett 15th (431) and Midland 16th (445).
Emma Ostwinkle raced to lead the Cougars with a 17th-place finish in 20:48. Grace Rhomberg was 33rd (21:44), Harley Bradtke-Stelken 60th (22:38 and Rachel Rhomberg 68th (22:56). Lilly Topping and Maddie Knapp placed 98th (24:33) and 118th (28:58), respectively.
Williamsburg scored 40 points to win the girls varsity team title. Solon was second (90), Mount Pleasant third (147), Hudson fourth (151), Iowa City Regina fifth (153), Starmont sixth (184), Marion seventh (190), Mason City eighth (208), Tipton ninth (218), Cascade 10th (262), North Linn 11th (265), Springville-Central City 12th (288), Prince of Peace 13th (290), Grundy Center-GR 14th (371), Independence 15th (382) and Washington 16th (390).
In the boys junior varsity race, Tyson Hill was 23rd (19:48), Davis Manternach 30th (19:55), Sean Pry 47th (20:38) and Ben Boffeli 63rd (21:34).
“I was very pleased with our effort and performances,” coach Bob Davidshofer said. “On one of the coldest mornings that I can remember competing, we had our best times of the year.
“Those setting personal records on the high school level include Adam Knepper, Vic Kauder, Davis Manternach, Tyson Hill, Ben Boffeli, Grace Rhomberg and Lilly Topping, On the junior high level those setting new records include: Nathaniel Manternach, Eli Merfeld, Trenton Topping, Nate Milum, Kennedy Simon and Issie Rhomberg.”
Cascade placed sixth of eight teams in the girls junior high two-mile race. Delaney Kremer led Cascade with a 19th-place finish in 15:40. Kennedy Simon 30th (15:42), Issie Rhomberg 43rd (16:57) and Leah Schwenker 46th (17:16).
The Cougars finished seventh in 10 teams in the boys junior high field. Nathaniel Manternach placed 18th (13:32.1), Eli Merfeld 19th (13:32.2), Trenton Topping 44th (14:30) and Nate Milum 80th (18:26).
