As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of your Cascade Public Library, let’s take a look at the numbers.
Currently there are 11,146 items available for checkout, including 10,128 books and 1,018 DVDs; 679 large print books; and 351 audiobooks; three newspaper subscriptions; 20 magazine subscriptions, plus access to magazines through Gale databases; five public computers, plus there is free wifi for use of personal devices.
In 2017, we had 16,028 patron visits to the library; 1,450 check-outs through Bridges (downloadable e-books); 1,700 items, or 20,400 items, were checked out per month or per year, respectively; and we had 24.4 percent increase in hours when the library’s schedule was changed in 2014 (39 total hours Monday-Saturday).
For programming, we have approximately one event for kids and another for adults each month, including magicians, animals, history, and local authors. Cup-a-Muga averages 13 participants per week. There are four monthly school outreaches, two at Cascade Elementary and two at Aquin Catholic Elementary, with new offerings for older elementary students being initiated. The 2017 Summer Reading Program had 125 children. Over this nine-week program, children are grouped by age and scheduled for different times on Wednesdays. However, when a guest artist is scheduled we hold the performance for the entire group at a larger venue, such as a city park or at City Hall.
For toys and leisure, we have 15 board games, a train table, wooden puzzles, coloring books for children and adults, and 10-20 adult puzzles available in the puzzle exchange at any given time. We have prizes for book check-outs, guessing games and other contests.
We support Cascade through participation in community events; delivery of materials to patrons that are unable to come to the library, and with historical efforts through 174 years (1840-2014) of Cascade Pioneer microfilm, plus access to all archived issues of the Cascade Pioneer at http://jonescounty.advantage-preservation.com as well as several family genealogy records that have been donated.
We are proud of our 50 years of support of and access to knowledge, entertainment, community engagement and literacy. Please “check out” the facility or website at www.cascade.lib.ia.us.
