Lavern Nagel, 95, died Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Caleb Schewe officiated the services.

Lavern Merle Nagel was born April 11, 1925 at Monticello. He was the son of Eahart and Esther Ely, Nagel. Laverne graduated from the Monticello Community Schools in 1943. Laverne married Dorothy Jacobs Oct. 21, 1950 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He started farming with his brother Ray when they bought a 150-acre farm for $7,000 dollars. He also bought and finished cattle and hogs for many years. In 1975 Lavern and his son Gary, started N&N Trailers selling trailers made in Arkansas. In 1984 they began producing their own trailers. In addition he was a Westfield grain auger dealer over 40 years.

Lavern was active in the Jones County farming community; he was a 4H leader for the Richland Boys, served on the 4H Extension Council and was inducted into the 4H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair. He was inducted into the Jones County Cattleman Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Jones County Friend of the Fair in 1999. Lavern and Dorothy, for many years, hosted a Fourth of July BBQ gathering for family and friends at their farm. His warm and friendly personality will be missed by everyone that knew him.

Surviving is his wife, Dorothy of 70 + years, three children: Linda (Ron) Kahler, Steve (Julie Majerus) Nagel, Gary (Kathy) Nagel, all of Monticello; five grandchildren: Tara (Chad) Kahler, Nick (Mackenzie) Kahler, Jeff (Kylie) Nagel, Kendi (Mitch) Monk, Jaycie (Nathan) Nagel; eight great-grandchildren: Gavin, Anicka, Beckett, Molli, Carver, Laekyn, Maeleigh and Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Ray; and two sisters, Olive Jane Nagel and Olive Maxine Herndon.
