Lehman Auto Service was started by Joe Lehman in 1970 and is now a multi-generational family business run by his son Phil Lehman. Now aided in the shop by his own sons, Lehman grew up in his father’s line of work and said he always knew he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“It’s something I always wanted to do. When I was 5 years old I’d come up here and fill up the pop machines and when I was seven I swept the floors. Later I washed cars and just worked my way through it all. There was never a doubt this was what I wanted to do.”
The business has existed for 51 years, even surviving a fire that demolished the main building on Nov. 7 2014. Lehman said that, even as the fire was still burning, he was busy coming up with ways to rebuild and keep the business running. Lehman continued service during the construction, renting out an office across the street from his establishment. The rebuilding was finished the following summer.
Lehman has served on a rotating advisory board for NICC Automotive, has served with the Cascade Fire Department for 15 years and has been a local scout leader for nine. Lehman said he loves being a part of the Cascade community that has been so good to him and his family. He takes satisfaction in his work and being a family-run business.
“Growing up watching my dad, growing up to take over, and possibly having one or more sons to take over after me, it’s pretty cool.”
Lehman also recommends his line of work to any young people interested in pursuing it as a career.
“I would highly recommend it. For years people have preached four-year colleges, but that’s kind of going away now. If you want a nice job with a nice income, whether it be automotive, carpentry or electrician, there are lots of opportunities out there right now.”
