The Cascade Cougar softball squad opened its 2019 season with a split of a doubleheader against Northeast at home, May 23.
In the first game, Cascade fell in a 17-14 shootout, scoring seven in the final two frames but coming up just short of the visitors.
Cougar senior Morgan Kremer drove in six of those runs off four hits and a home run, while senior Whitney Clemens went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior Hailey Hannan finished with a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI of her own.
In the second game, Cascade won in walk-off fashion, toppling Northeast, 9-8, off the bats of Devon Simon (3-for-4, three RBIs) and Hannan (2-for-3, RBI). Clemens, Addy Weber and Mae Felton also added an RBI each in the nightcap.
“We hit the ball well. Defensively, we made a few mistakes and several balls hit to the outfield we needed to make better attempts and take some runs away from Northeast,” coach Ron Lehman.
“Northeast has a good hitting team but I’m sure they went home thinking the same about us. (Kremer) and (Clemens) drove in 10 runs between them in the first game. (Simon) and (Hannon) had the big hits to help us win in the second game. The team battled all night long and never gave up even when we were down.”
