Lois Marie Smith, 82, of Epworth, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 in rural Epworth from injuries sustained in a pedestrian/motor vehicle accident.

Friends and relatives of Lois called from 2-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, where a rosary was held at 3 p.m.

Services for Lois were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Epworth, with the Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Mass servers were Will Brehm, Jude Brehm and Augustine Smith. Eucharistic Ministers were Karla Hicks and Maggie Mensen. Lectors were William Smith, Katherine Smith, Anna Smith and Anika Brehm. Placing of the Pall was done by John Smith, Mike Smith, Sara Brehm, Marty Smith, Pete Smith and Jenny Sandeen. Giftbeaers were Noah Smith, Eleanor Brehm, Antonia Smith, Isaiah Smith, Ingrid Sandeen and Lucia Smith. A Eulogy was read by Bridgid Smith. Burial was held in St. Patrick Cemetery in Epworth.

Honorary pallbearers for Lois were her grandchildren.

Casketbearers were Owen Brehm, Ethan Brehm, Andy Smith, Elijah Smith, William Smith and Maeve Sandeen.

Lois was born Sept. 17, 1936 in Placid, daughter of Cyril M. and Viola (Delaney) McDermott. She received her education in the Placid and Epworth schools. She also attended the Mercy School of Nursing. On Oct. 15, 1960 she was united in marriage to John Smith at St. John in Placid. The couple farmed in rural Epworth.

She was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Epworth, and was instrumental in implementing the Liturgical committee and Eucharistic Adoration. She was also very involved in the Epworth food pantry. She loved taking walks, watching sunsets, picking flowers, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Lois was well known for her delicious homemade breads and her famous oatmeal raisin-filled cookies.

She is survived by her husband, John Smith, of Epworth; five children, Michael (Susan) Smith, of St. Charles, Minn., Sara (Mike) Brehm, of Peosta, Marty (Lori) Smith, of Epworth, Peter (Rebecca) Smith, of Cascade and Jenny Sandeen, of Rochester, Minn.; 33 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Dorrance (Verna) McDermott and Neal (Katie) McDermott, of Epworth, Phyllis (Darris) Goerdt, of North Liberty and Julie Casey, of Placid; her brother and sisters-in-law, Pat (Donna) Smith, of Dubuque, Ray (Chere) Smith, of Plainfield, Ind., Phyllis (Gary) Astgen, of East Dubuque, Ill., Kathy (Wally) Link, of Dyersville, Rita Benter, of Dubuque, Darlene Sexton, of Dubuque and Bill Brown, of Bettendorf.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dennis McDermott; a sister, Mary Catherine McDermott in infancy; a brother-in-law, Donald Casey; brothers and sister-in-law, Eugene Smith, Ann Brown, Dennis Smith and Dick Smith.

A Lois M. Smith memorial fund for masses has been established in lieu of flowers.
