Cascade man sentenced to federal prison for fraudulent documents

A Cascade man in the country illegally recently was sentenced to five months in federal prison for using another person’s Social Security number and possessing a fraudulent green card.

A jury previously convicted Luis Gonzalez-Esparsa, 46, who is a Mexican citizen, of unlawful use of an identification document and misuse of a Social Security card. The verdict came at the conclusion of a one-day trial in November in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Authorities have said Gonzalez-Esparsa used someone else’s Social Security card and a fraudulent green card when applying for a job in Peosta, in June 2018. The green card was issued for a Mexican woman.

Authorities said Gonzalez-Esparsa has lived in the U.S. illegally since 1996.

He faced up to 15 years in prison for his convictions. There is no parole in the federal system, and after he serves five months in prison, he will be on a three-year term of supervised release, according to a press release.
