Archdiocese, Cascade Chamber warn of scams

Two Cascade-linked organizations are warning the public about purported scams that are being carried out by individuals disguising themselves as members of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and Cascade Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Archdiocese has received reports of fraudulent emails that appear to be coming from pastors, a Facebook post from the St. Thomas Aquinas Pastorate states.

“These emails are part of an international scheme that has emerged over the past few years,” the post states. “Scammers are trying to trick parishioners into believing that their pastor is requesting money or gift cards for various parish needs through a series of email messages.”

The post states these scam emails are coming from different addresses, often disguised to look like personal Gmail or Yahoo accounts. They said official Archdiocesan priest email addresses end in @dbqarch.org.

“The body of these messages are generic and include phrases like ‘Are you in the office now?’ and ‘How are you? Please contact me,’” the post states. “None of our staff would ever ask for money or gift cards by email, so please ignore such an email if you receive one.”

The Chamber of Commerce stated they have been receiving reports of spoofed Chamber associated emails being sent to the public.

“We have been directed to recommend you mark as spam/delete. Don’t click on anything and if it’s questionable feel free to reach 563-590-8611,” a Facebook post on its page states.
