An early morning fire Thursday swept through Cascade Lanes and Happy Joe’s Pizza, 1303 1st Ave. East, causing extensive damage to the structure.

According to Denny Green, Cascade fire chief, the department was paged out at 2:38 a.m. for a structure fire. “We arrived on scene and heavy smoke was coming out of the eaves all around the building,” the chief said. “We looked inside. Smoke was banked down and obviously, it was a heavily involved fire.”

Green said he called out the Bernard and Monticello fire departments, and that the Farley department brought down the mobile air station it jointly owns with Cascade.

“Once we had hose lines ready we gained entry through the front door and located what we thought the source of the fire was and put it out," Green said.

The chief said the fire was mainly in the ceiling and attic space, and that firefighters battled a great deal of smoke, due to the building’s size making it difficult to ventilate.

Members of the Cascade Fire Department were still on the scene at 8 a.m., taking care of hot spots.

The state fire marshal was on the scene to begin an investigation.
